Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about how SobrFriends works. Can't find what you need? Visit the Help Center or email us.

How does LifeLine work?

LifeLine is a one-tap distress signal for moments when you need support right away. When you activate it, SobrFriends alerts available sobriety companions near you and gives them the chance to respond.

To avoid overwhelming everyone at once, alerts go out in widening circles — first to companions closest to you, then expanding outward over a short window (a few minutes) until someone responds. The first companion to accept is connected with you in a private chat so you can talk things through.

LifeLine shares only an approximate sense of distance with companions, never your exact location. If no one is available, you'll be guided to other resources. LifeLine is peer support, not an emergency service — if you're in immediate danger, call 911, or call/text 988 for crisis support.

What is a sobriety companion?

A sobriety companion is a peer in recovery who volunteers to support others — by responding to LifeLine signals and through one-on-one messaging. Companions are not professional clinicians or counselors; they offer lived-experience, peer-to-peer support.

How do I become a sobriety companion?

Members with enough time in recovery can apply from their Profile. Applications include a few short questions and are reviewed before approval. Once approved, you can set your availability and start supporting peers.

Is my location shared with other people?

Only if you choose to share it, and even then only as an approximate distance (for example, "2 miles away"). Your exact GPS coordinates are never shown to other users. You can change or turn off location sharing any time in Privacy Settings.

How is my privacy protected?

Your full name and email are never shown to other users — others see only your first name and last initial. Messages are private between participants. Recovery-related information is treated as sensitive and is never used for advertising or sold. See the full Privacy Policy for details.

Is SobrFriends free?

Yes. SobrFriends is free to use. Donations are welcome and help keep the Service running, but they're entirely optional.

How do I delete my account?

Open the app and go to Profile → Settings → Delete account. Deleting your account removes your profile, messages, and LifeLine history from our systems.

Is SobrFriends a substitute for professional help?

No. SobrFriends offers peer support and is not a medical, clinical, or emergency service. It works best alongside professional care. If you're in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), or call 911 if you're in immediate danger.
