Terms of Use
Last updated: June 2025
These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the SobrFriends mobile app and website (together, the "Service"). Please read them carefully. By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms.
SobrFriends is not an emergency service
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911. For mental health or suicide crisis support, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). SobrFriends is peer support — it is not a substitute for professional medical or mental health care.
1. Who can use SobrFriends
You must be at least 18 years old to use the Service. By using SobrFriends you represent that you are 18 or older and that the information you provide is accurate.
2. What SobrFriends is — and isn't
SobrFriends is a peer support platform that connects people in addiction recovery with peer supporters ("sobriety companions"). Peer supporters are not licensed clinicians, therapists, doctors, or counselors acting in a professional capacity, and nothing on the Service constitutes medical, clinical, legal, or professional advice.
The Service is not a crisis line, emergency service, or treatment program. It does not guarantee that a companion will be available or will respond at any given time. Always use 911 or 988 for emergencies.
3. Your account
You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for all activity that occurs under your account. Notify us promptly if you believe your account has been compromised. You may delete your account at any time from the app (Profile → Settings → Delete account).
4. Sobriety companions
Members may apply to become sobriety companions. Approval is at our discretion and may require meeting eligibility criteria (such as a minimum length of sobriety). Companions volunteer their time to support peers and agree to act respectfully, maintain confidentiality, and follow these Terms and our community standards. Companion status may be revoked at any time.
5. Acceptable use
You agree not to use the Service to:
- Harass, abuse, threaten, or harm another person
- Share content that is unlawful, hateful, sexually explicit, or violent
- Impersonate others or misrepresent your identity or affiliation
- Solicit, sell, or promote products, services, or substances
- Provide medical, clinical, or professional advice you are not qualified to give
- Collect, share, or misuse other users' personal or location information
- Attempt to disrupt, reverse-engineer, or gain unauthorized access to the Service
We may remove content, suspend, or terminate accounts that violate these Terms or that we reasonably believe pose a risk to the community.
6. Messages and content
You are responsible for the content you share. By posting content you grant SobrFriends a limited license to store and display it as needed to operate the Service. Messages are private between participants; however, we may access content when investigating a reported abuse or safety concern, or when required by law. See our Privacy Policy for details.
7. Reporting and safety
If you encounter abusive behavior or a safety concern, use the in-app Report feature or contact us. We review reports but cannot guarantee any particular outcome or response time. You remain responsible for your own safety and decisions.
8. Donations
SobrFriends may accept voluntary donations, processed by Stripe. Donations support the operation of the Service and, except where required by law, are non-refundable. We do not store your full payment details.
9. Disclaimers
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free, or that any companion will be available or that any support provided will meet your needs. Your use of the Service is at your own risk.
10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, SobrFriends and its operators will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss arising from your use of (or inability to use) the Service or from interactions with other users.
11. Changes to the Service and these Terms
We may modify or discontinue features of the Service at any time. If we make material changes to these Terms, we will notify users through the app or website before the changes take effect. Continued use after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
12. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the state in which SobrFriends operates, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
